Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

My name is Mike, I’m a street and bokeh photographer from the Chicagoland area.

How did you start with photography?

I originally started as a teenager when making skate videos with friends. Then after that I spent more time on the hobby while studying filmmaking at community college.

How can you convey a specific mood or emotions through a photograph?

The conditions, aesthetics, and lighting are some factors that could help convey specific moods and emotions. Also finding the right scene and framing for what you are trying to express can add certain elements to the image.

How did you find your photography style?

I found my style from shooting and editing on the regular. Also searching for new inspiration helped me experiment with different styles. Sharing a lot also helped.

How do you use storytelling in your photography, and what do you think are the most important elements of a successful visual narrative?

I use storytelling by constructing a frame or image that shows the viewer a scene and an environment that I’m trying to connect them with. The composition is very important when using storytelling in photography. I frequently concept compositions that are aesthetically pleasing and revisit them when the conditions and scene is right for what I’m trying to convey. Timing and perspective are also key when capturing moments in a successful visual narrative.

What gear do you use?

I’m currently using a Sony a7c with a Sony 40mm 2.5 G. I’ve only been shooting with one focal length each year as sort of a challenge for myself. Last year I used a 85mm and a 55mm the previous year.

What editing software do you use and have you got any editing tips?

I’m currently editing with Lightroom mobile. Thoroughly learning color grading can have a tremendous impact on your work and can save you a lot of time.

What are your favourite shooting conditions (night, rain, sunlight, etc.)

Daytime rain is my favorite. The wet streets and sidewalks help me see the world in a different way.

How do you stay motivated?

I stay motivated by enjoying the process and progressing with my work.

Who or what inspires you ?
